The Ashley Hall Plantation name traces back to the 1670s, when English settler Stephen Bull was granted land along the Ashley River and built one of the earliest houses in the South Carolina colony; his son later constructed a Georgian mansion that stood until it was burned in 1865 to keep it from Union forces. The historic plantation site itself, with its tabby ruins and archaeological remains, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits apart from the modern neighborhood that now carries its name. That neighborhood was developed roughly a century later, from about 1980 to 1985, as part of the former plantation acreage was subdivided for residential use. The result is a distinctly 1980s West Ashley community — brick and traditional single-family homes on established, tree-lined streets — built on ground with an unusually deep and well-documented Charleston history.
