Isle of Palms is a seven-mile barrier island a straight shot from downtown Charleston over the Isle of Palms Connector - close enough for an easy weeknight dinner reservation, far enough to feel like a different pace of life entirely. Outside of the gated Wild Dunes resort on the island's north end (covered separately below), Isle of Palms is a genuine beach town: oak-shaded, non-gated residential streets a short walk from the sand, a working marina, and a small commercial strip of restaurants and shops that still feels more local than resort.
